Overbrook School students are hitting the track this spring as the school adds track & field to its athletic program for students in grades 2-8.

Overbrook joined the Nashville Youth Athletic League for a spring competitive season beginning this year. Practices began with the inaugural team earlier this month. Students will be training in the 100, 200, 400, 800 and one-mile distances during the first year. Athletic Director Anthony Simpson said he will likely add the field events – shot put and long jump – next year.

“We decided to go ahead and get a team together this year to see how things run this first year,” said Coach Simpson, who was team captain of the cross country and track & field squad at Bryan College. “Running is extremely beneficial because it helps with so many sports. We have offered cross country in the fall here for a long time, but this adds another distance option for our student athletes and the opportunity to run in the spring.”

The team competed in the first of four meets this past Sunday, March 26.

Simpson will coach the longer distances with help from assistants working with students on the shorter distances.

“We’ll do a lot of speed work and strength training this year,” he said, adding strength training -- which includes core work such as planks, push-ups, sit ups, etc. -- helps students not just in track and field but in all sports.

“A lot of kids can pair track & field with other sports such as tennis or soccer in the spring,” Simpson said. “And it gives our younger student athletes another opportunity to participate in a school sport in the spring time.”

It also helps that Overbrook School has a track & field facility for the team. The school shares a full-size track with St. Cecilia Academy. Simpson said he hopes to be able to host elementary track & field meets in future years.

The Overbrook boys junior varsity basketball team recently won the Nashville Diocesan Athletic Council championship tournament. Overbrook offers cross country, football, swimming, volleyball, golf, cheerleading, basketball, tennis and soccer to its students in addition to the new track & field program.

“Having a full athletic program is important because it provides students with so many great lessons that complement their academic development,” said Principal Sister Julia Marie, O.P. “We are thrilled to add another sport to our offerings so that as many students as possible can find an athletic activity that fits their needs and abilities.”
